Lizzie Marvelly with members of the St Hilda’s choirs

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Today we welcomed Lizzie Marvelly to St Hilda’s.  As an accomplished singer/songwriter and performer Lizzie spent some time talking to choir members this morning before presenting to Year 11-13 students.  Lizzie spoke about her life journey in the music industry, her development of the #mybodymyterms campaign and the establishment of her website  Villainesse is an online media project aiming to create smart, no-filter media by and for young women. Combining the high-level student journalism of late secondary and tertiary students with stories by inspirational figures, Villainesse aims to cater for the leaders of the future, encouraging young women to think critically about the world around them, celebrate their intelligence and support each other. In short, Villainesse is on a mission to empower young women.  Lizzie spoke on a range of topics and was then interviewed with a Q & A session by Nicola Wilson-Stewart, our Board of Trustees Student Representative. The senior girls were very receptive and enjoyed having the chance to listen to Lizzie – we were very lucky that she was able to make the time to visit us, while in Dunedin to sing the national anthem for the All Blacks test tomorrow night.

Parent Workshop

On the same note we urge parents to attend the upcoming workshops on issues for our girls in today’s global and demanding world – ‘Helping Your Daughter to Navigate the 21st Century’. We will be running the workshop in a variety of locations, to ensure as many parents as possible are able to attend. For more information on dates and venues, click here.

Jamie MacKenzie and Sophie O’Driscoll at The Big Sing
The Junior Choir performing at The Big Sing

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The Junior Choir, Madrigal and Sings Hilda all performed at The Big Sing Regional Competition on Wednesday. All three choirs performed well and should be congratulated on their efforts.  Sings Hilda received a commended award and the Madrigal received a highly commended award as well as placing first in Category 2.  We now await the results to see who will attend The Big Sing National Finale later in the year.

Congratulations to all the girls who performed in the Chamber Music competitions last weekend. A lot of hard work went into these performances.

Last Friday night’s formal was a lovely evening. The girls and their partners looked wonderful and it was very enjoyable. Many thanks to the prefects for their hard work in organising this event.

Good luck to students involved in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Cross Country and the South Island Secondary Schools’ Squash Tournament taking place this weekend.

The 2016 Z Club

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Junior students were treated to a Shakespeare Workshop on Wednesday.  The girls spent the morning exploring renaissance dance, reciting sonnets, designing Elizabethan quilt squares, cooking for the shared feast, performing the bard’s words, bringing the plays to film and learning how to  hurl an insult like an Elizabethan.   Staff were more than happy to get in to the spirit of things and dressed in character for the day. This was certainly a great way to celebrate the 400 year anniversary.
