Weekly News – Term 3 | Week 1

Molly Butt and Josie Cook

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome to the new term, I trust the girls had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break. Open Night went very well last night.  The girls always do a fantastic job of showing off our school to new families and we always receive such positive feedback.

On Sunday Mrs Barron, Mrs Dey, Ms Nader-Turner, Mrs Haggie and Sergeant John Hedges will be travelling to visit our boarder parents as we begin the first of our parent seminars: Helping your Daughter to Navigate the 21st Century.  Thank you to all parents who have RSVPd so far.  The seminar for day girls will be held in the chapel on August 11 and you can email admin@shcs.school.nz to RSVP if you haven’t done so already.  We thank you for supporting this important initiative.

Next week is busy with the Year 7 & 8 Social on Wednesday night (7pm to 9pm), the Year 9 & 10 Social on Thursday night (7pm to 9pm) and the Year 11 Midwinter Dance on Friday night.  We hope that the girls enjoy each of these special events.

A reminder to those who signed up to attend the Nutrition and The Active Student Seminar presented by Dr Kirsty Fairbairn next Wednesday at 6.30pm in the Chapel.

Our 2017 Year 11 students will make the move from iPad to laptop next year.  More information can be found on the Laptop/iPad page under Informational Links.  The 2017 bundle price won’t be confirmed until later in the year however this is a good starting point for information.

Information on procedures for snow days and late starts can be found on the front page of the Parent Portal – there is a link on the right hand side of the page under ‘Informational Links’.

P.F.A. Sports and Cultural Fund

The Parents’ and Friends’ Association have a Sports and Cultural fund which is available to subsidise students whose are travelling to an event and their participation in this event will be of benefit to the school. This fund is generated by the main fundraising event that takes place on alternate years to the school fair.

As indicated at the end of last term we have made changes to how applications are made for the Sports and Cultural Fund. The main change will be that parents will apply directly for their daughter rather than team applications. Parents are able to access this fund once per year per child and this application can be found under Informational Links on the main page of the Parent Portal.

The fund is available to students whose achievements will be of benefit to the school. The grant will be available to contribute to travel, accommodation and event costs. Assistance available to subsidise total travel, accommodation and event costs above $300 per student. As a guideline the payments will be up to $50 for South Island, $100 for North Island and $200 for International.

Applications will be considered by the P.F.A committee, which meets monthly. The P.F.A. Committee will have discretion to consider the applications on a case by case basis. Successful applicants will get the amount credited to their school account.

If you have any questions regarding this fund please contact Judy Maw at jmaw@shcs.school.nz.
