Best Banner at Maadi Cup 2017

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

A large number of students have been away from school this week involved in Summer Tournament Week.  The Touch team were runners up in the South Island Secondary Schools’ Touch Tournament with a loss in extra time against Columba in the final.  The Water Polo team placed third at the South Island Secondary Schools’ Water Polo Tournament.  The rowing girls started their week at Maadi Cup by winning the banner competition.  The Girls’ U15 Coxed Quad Sculls team (E Burnside, E Hurdle, M Gow, C Chapman-Cohen, cox G Beattie) placed 5th in their C Final.  The Girls’ U18 Double Sculls team (I Corbett, G Hunter) placed 4th in their C Final.  The Girls’ U18  Single Sculls (J Cook) placed 2nd in the C Final.  The Girls’ U18 Novice Coxed Eight (E O’Meara, H Jolly, S Sinclair, O Whelan-Henderson, B Grounds, L Verkerk, M Marsh, E Christie, cox T Mason) placed 2nd in their B Final.  Later this afternoon the Girls’ U18 Novice Double Sculls (S Sinclair, O Whelan-Henderson) will be racing in a B Final and we wish them well for this.

Tiffany Zhou (2017 International Student Leader) and Dayna Gallagher (2017 Maori Pasifika Student Leader) with Mrs Barron

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This week we had the pleasure of announcing Tiffany Zhou as International Student Leader.  Tiffany joined St Hilda’s in 2014 and has been a member of the Orchestra, attended The Big Sing, and was the recipient of The Rosalynd North Accompanist Cup at last year’s prize giving.  Tiffany also provides tutoring to students in Year 12 Pure Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry classes.  Tiffany is an able recipient and will lead the international student group well.

A leadership position has been created this year for a Maori and Pasifika Student Leader. Four student nominees presented to their fellow Maori and Pasifika students and yesterday we were able to present Dayna Gallagher with the newly designed Maori and Pasifika badge in Chapel. Dayna has been a consistent member of the Kapa Haka group, is one of the House Captain’s for Wellington and has played Hockey for the A Team for four years.  Dayna is a member of Madrigal and performed with them in The Big Sing Finale in 2016, was a member of the Suspect cast last year and is part of a Shakespeare and Theatre Sports group this year.  Dayna will represent our Maori and Pasifika students well.

Year 10 students with Dr Jenine Beekhuyzen, founder of the Tech Girls Movement

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Students from sister school Ichikawa arrived on Monday evening.  The students have settled happily in to their host families and have been enjoying spending time in class with our students as well as taking part in sight seeing.

On Tuesday Mrs McMahon arranged for a group of Year 10 students to attend a ‘Tech Girls are Superheroes’ talk.  Dr Jenine Beekhuyzen, from the University of Southern Queensland, is the founder of the Tech Girls Movement and wants to increase the number of females involved in the IT industry.

2016 Scholarship recipients with Mrs Barron and guest speaker Mrs Kathy Grant

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This week we held the Academic Blues Service where we acknowledged scholarship recipients and students who achieved Excellence endorsements in NCEA in 2016.  Mrs Kathy Grant, ex Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and mother of ‘old’ Head Girl Rebecca Grant, was our guest speaker and her words were inspiring. She encouraged the girls to be brave, stay curious and remain humble.  The full list of recipients can be found here.
